What is a mystic?A mystic is a person who seeks a direct, personal experience of The universe, God, the divine, or ultimate reality through contemplative practices such as meditation, prayer, or other spiritual exercises. Mystics are often highly sensitive to their surroundings and have a deep connection to the essence of all living things as well as nature itself. Mystics may also be referred to as sages, old souls, or spiritual leaders. They can be found in many different religious and spiritual traditions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and others.Who was the first mystic?The concept of mysticism is present in many ancient spiritual traditions, so it is difficult to say who the first mystic was. Some of the earliest recorded mystics were the sages and spiritual leaders of ancient India, China, and Egypt, who sought a direct experience of the divine through meditative practices and spiritual exercises. In many ancient cultures, mystics were considered to be holy men and women who had access to knowledge and wisdom beyond that of ordinary mortals.In the western tradition, the first mystic could be traced back to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who lived in the 6th century BCE. He established a secret society, which focused on the spiritual development of its members through meditation, asceticism, and other practices. He was considered to have had mystical experiences and his teaching were a combination of mathematics, ethics, and spiritual beliefs.In Christianity, the Desert Fathers, a group of early Christian hermits, monks, and ascetics who lived in the Egyptian desert from the 3rd to the 5th centuries CE, are considered to be some of the earliest Christian mystics. They sought a deeper, more personal relationship with God through ascetic practices such as fasting, solitude, and prayer.Who are the most spiritual people in the world?It's difficult to say who the most spiritual people in the world are, as spirituality is a personal and subjective experience. However, there are many individuals throughout history and in the present day who have been recognized for their deep spiritual practices, teachings, and contributions to their respective spiritual traditions.In the Eastern tradition, figures such as the Buddha, Mahavira, and Patanjali are considered spiritual leaders for their teachings and practices in Buddhism, Jainism, and Yoga respectively. In the Western tradition, figures such as Jesus, Saint Paul, and Saint Francis of Assisi are considered spiritual leaders for their teachings and practices in Christianity.In the present day, there are many spiritual leaders and teachers from various traditions who are widely respected for their spiritual practices and teachings, such as the Dalai Lama and many others. It's worth noting that, many spiritual leaders and teachers, who have had a great impact on many people, might not be well-known or famous by the general public. And also, the concept of spirituality is personal, someone who is not well-known or famous may have a deep spiritual practice and experience.How spiritual can one be?Spirituality is a personal and subjective experience, and different people may have different definitions of what it means to be spiritual. However, some common characteristics of a spiritually-minded person may include:
A deep sense of connection to something greater than oneself, whether it be God, the universe, or an ultimate reality. A sense of inner peace, contentment, and well-being that is not dependent on external circumstances. A desire to live in alignment with one's values and principles, and to treat others with compassion and kindness. A regular practice of meditation, prayer, or other spiritual exercises to deepen one's connection to the divine or ultimate reality. An understanding that everything is interconnected and that all living beings are part of a larger whole. A willingness to let go of attachments and to surrender to a higher power.
It's worth noting that, being spiritual doesn't necessarily mean one must be religious, or that one should conform to certain set of beliefs or dogmas.Spirituality is a personal experience and can be cultivated in a variety of ways, and it's an ongoing journey. It's important for each person to find their own path and what works for them to explore and deepen their spiritual presence, practice and greater purpose.
