Some of the earliest recorded mystics were the sages and spiritual leaders of ancient India, China, and Egypt, who sought a direct experience of the divine through meditative practices and spiritual exercises. In many ancient cultures, mystics were considered to be holy men and women who had access to knowledge and wisdom beyond that of ordinary mortals. In the western tradition, the first mystic could be traced back to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who lived in the 6th century BCE. He established a secret society, which focused on the spiritual development of its members through meditation, asceticism, and other practices. He was considered to have had mystical experiences and his teaching were a combination of mathematics, ethics, and spiritual beliefs. In Christianity, the Desert Fathers, a group of early Christian hermits, monks, and ascetics who lived in the Egyptian desert from the 3rd to the 5th centuries CE, are considered to be some of the earliest Christian mystics.
